Thermometers are set to plummet to sub-zero temperatures in just days, weather maps suggest. While December snow was previously predicted to hit the mountainous parts of Scotland, latest predictions suggest it may even reach as far as the south coast of England.
But what is far more likely is a teeth-chattering -9C across in parts of the country, bringing with it frost and icy conditions.
A new weather map by forecaster WX Charts shows that at noon on Wednesday, December 12, it will plummet to -9C in the north of England, particularly on higher ground in the likes of the North Pennines. Meanwhile across the rest of the country, the mercury will also drop below freezing.
While at the same time, another map shows snow is expected to fall in huge parts of the country, including the south of england, Wales, as well as the north west of England, and large parts of Scotland.

Netweather’s Terry Scholey said: “Whenever we encounter blocked or partially blocked weather patterns, models often struggle to adapt.
“Especially the 14-day models have been facing difficulties, sometimes indicating completely different outcomes.
“But what I do know is that two of the three closely matched archive years I have been monitoring produced a severe December.
“This doesn’t necessarily mean we are heading towards an early severe winter, especially given our ever-warming climate.
“Nevertheless, it’s definitely food for thought for the coming weeks.”
The Met Office suggest that the weather will be “colder than average” in early December, including the possibility of “a more general snow towards the turn of the month.”
It adds, for the period November 28 to December 7: “Cloud and rain is likely to be clearing southeastern England early on, followed by a period of widely colder, drier and brighter weather and the return of overnight frosts.
“Scattered showers along with an overnight ice risk may affect some coastal areas of northern and eastern Scotland, and eastern England at times, which could turn increasingly wintry over hills in the north.

“These conditions could then persist, particularly in the north, but there is an increasing chance of areas of cloud, rain and/or snow, perhaps with strong winds too, spreading north across at least southern areas from later next week.”
Jim Dale, a meteorologist with British Weather Services, earlier told Express.co.uk: “A taste of winter incoming; just the start of it but with more to come in the medium term.
“Snow limited to the mountain of Scotland at first; likely a little more universal through first part of December. Watching an already wintry Scandinavia for what it may deliver our way as the weeks unfold.”
