As the UK moves towards the end of the year, the thoughts of many will be on what they can get their loved ones for Christmas.

However, some people will also be thinking about where they can travel on holiday next year.

While a few may plan a staycation, others will be looking abroad to the pretty towns of Europe and beyond.

One city in France is famous for its wine, but comes with one major caveat; travellers have to go through the worst airport in Europe to get there.

Located in the south of the country, Bourdeaux is a city known around the world for its incredible wine.

The city shares its name with the Bourdeaux region which in turn shares the name of the wine produced there.

Bourdeaux city is considered the world capital of wine and is home to the world’s main wine fair.

It is believed that the wine which made the region famous was introduced by the Romans for local consumption.

Alongside wine, Bourdeaux is also known as a culinary hub serving some of the world’s finest food.

As a result, the city is popular with tourists who travel there in their millions every year, but face going through Europe’s worst airport.

According to Holidu, Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport is the worst airport in Europe. They said: “Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport in France hits our number one spot with an average Google rating of 2.7.

“The main complaints about this airport were the small size with lack of seating for travellers.”

They added: “To top it off, with the recent troubles of staff strikes cancelling many flights, you may want to consider some alternatives if you are planning to fly through Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport.

“Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (3.9 stars / 5,041 reviews) is only 3-4 hours by train and 2-3 by car, or there are also a plethora of train and bus options available if you can’t get to your destination without flying.”

Despite the problems with the airport, once inside Bourdeaux’s famous streets, travellers are in for a treat as they explore the world centre of good wine, steak restaurants and stunning architecture.

One of the most popular places to visit is the Grand Theatre. Considered by many to be the cultural heart of the city, users on TripAdvisor described it as “worth experiencing at least once in a lifetime” and that it was “worth spending some time investigating it and admiring all of its inner as well as its outer beauty”.

Another iconic landmark is the Place de Bourse, a grand and legendary square known for its mirrored water feature.

One reviewer said: “Beautifully preserved with stunning buildings surrounding an impressive square. When the miroir d’eau is active, the reflection creates a breathtaking spectacle. A must-see when you are in Bordeaux.”

A second person said: “The principal buildings here are impressive in their own right, quite apart from the effect from the far side of the Water Mirror. The Fountain of the Three Graces is the final piece making a visit here a central part of touring in Bordeaux.

“A royal square, it is near the Garonne River. Part of the city walls were demolished so Louis XV could thereby celebrate himself as France [no vanity there]. The core design is neoclassical.”
