Is Prighozin still alive? Belarus activist throws doubt on Wagner chief’s dea…

The Belarussian political activist said it was a trademark of the mercenary group, which is officially a Russian state-funded private military company, to simply vanish.

Prigozhin was reported to have died on August 23 following a plane crash in near the village of Kuzhenkino in the Tver region of Russia, according to the country’s investigative committee.

False reports have previously circulated over his death, including in the wake of a plane crash in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2019.

The exiled leader of Belarus said some of the Wagner group remained in the country and that pro-Russia Alexander Lukashenko who assumed power although the vote was seen as manipulated and sparked mass protests.

But she said the numbers there had fallen.

“But I think Lukashenko wants Wagner around as he uses this trademark to threaten neighbours and threat Belarussian people because Wagner are thugs who kill people so on and so forth.

“Lukashenko has Wagner’s organisation in Belarus but we don’t know what they are doing. The quantities have decreased, we have people’s intelligence. If they get some information they immediately send it to us.”

The Ministry of Defence, in a daily intelligence update, said Prigozhin, 62, had been known to “exercise exceptional security measures”, it was “highly likely” that he was among those killed in the plane crash.

Putin was blamed for the incident as the Wagner revolt was seen the biggest threat to his position in 23 years.

Days before he is said to have died, Prigozhin released a video addressing rumours about his wellbeing and threats to his life and said: “For everyone discussing whether I’m alive or not and how I’m doing. It’s currently a weekend in the second half of August 2023. I’m in Africa.
