Tributes made to Prince Harry for his birthday over the years have revealed that royals "miss the way he was" before the infamous Megxit saga that saw he and his wife leave royal life behind.
Harry turns 39 today (Friday, September 15) and is currently in Düsseldorf, Germany, with Meghan Markle for this year's iteration of the Invictus Games – the sporting competition he started for wounded servicemen and women.
On Wednesday (September 13) the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were spotted at a traditional German restaurant with their team from Archewell, a far cry from what they would be doing if they were still royals.

And royal commentator Richard Kay argued in the Daily Mail that current royals "miss the way Harry was".
In 2020, royal photos celebrating Prince Harry’s birthday triggered a row over Meghan Markle’s conspicuous absence.
Some royal fans believed that Meghan’s absence was no accident, but Kay said: “However compelling the narrative of brothers at war may be, insiders dismiss suggestions that Meghan was purposely not included in the Cambridges’ photo.
“According to aides there is a protocol surrounding royal birthdays, just as there is for any other Palace-sponsored event. Spouses are never included.”
However, Kay argued that the chosen photos – from several years before the 2020 birthday – had a hidden meaning.

He said: “While it is of course unlikely that the royals would indulge in mind games, many will doubtless consider that the message here is a poignant one: ‘We miss you the way you were.’”
Harry’s dad King Charles and the Queen Camilla, now king and queen, shared pictures of the pair at the Invictus Games in 2014 to mark the occasion.
The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, who have both since passed, also posted a pic of their beaming grandson at a Queen Young Leaders reception at Buckingham Palace in 2017.
The picture of Harry and the Queen was taken in 2017 and the shot of his father brimming with pride at his son is six-years-old.
As of writing, the official Royal Family X page, as well as that of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are yet to pay homage to Harry's birthday this year.
