Seven boys aged between 14 and 18 were kidnapped by drug cartel thugs before being beaten and left for dead. Authorities in Mexico have now found the bodies of six, with just one having survived.

Diego Rodríguez, 17, Jorge Ocon, 14, Héctor Salcedo, 14, Gumaro Santacruz, 18, Oscar Rojas, 15, and Jesús Rodríguez, 18, were found dead by at a remote ranch in the state of Zacatecas. Sole survivor Sergio Acevedo, 18, is being guarded by police in hospital where he is recovering from head injuries.

The boys were reportedly hanging out with a group of girls at a ranch in the La Soledad neighbourhood on Sunday (September 24) when the group of gun-toting cartel hitmen raided it and took them. The boys themselves are not thought to be involved with drug gangs.

They were forced into cars and driven nine miles away to another ranch. All the while they were brutally beaten. The cartel thugs then abandoned them, sparking a search effort.

It comes just over a month on from when five men were kidnapped in the neighbouring state of Jalisco. They were taken to an abandoned ranch and killed, and horrifying footage showed at least one of them was forced to kill another.

Authorities said Acevedo, the sole survivor of this latest kidnapping, is stable and under the supervision of a psychologist.

His mum told MILENIO: "He recognizes me, but he has no idea of time right now, maybe it's because of the beatings, I don't know. He said that he is not up to bad things, he said: 'I have not done anything wrong.' I told him: 'I know, my son, I know.'"

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador told reporters that Acevedo had been interviewed by investigators. His mum denied this. According to El Zol de Zacatecas, she said: "It's not true, my son has not said anything, he is not well right now, he is sedated. He has not declared anything nor has he spoken to anyone other than me."

Authorities believe the kidnappers were hitmen from the infamous Sinaloa Cartel. The gang remains at war with the rival Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) in the area. At least six people have been arrested over the killings.
