British expats flock to ‘seafood haven’ in Portugal

Dreaming of working or retiring outside the UK? If the beach is the ideal destination for you, there’s a gorgeous area of Portugal that could be the perfect place to relocate to.

The expert team at Your Overseas Home have shared the best destinations in Europe for British expats looking to leave the UK.

Christopher Nye, chief editor at Your Overseas Home, said: “Faro, the capital city of Portugal’s Algarve region, offers the perfect mix of history and cultural interest that proves popular for both holidaymakers and prospective expats.”

The Algarve region is one of Portugal’s leading holiday destinations and many of its beaches have been awarded Blue Flag status for their cleanliness and quality.

Christopher added: “First of all, Faro is a haven for food lovers, particularly seafood enthusiasts.

“The city’s proximity to the sea means that visitors can savour a huge variety of fresh fish and seafood dishes in many local restaurants and markets.”

The Algarve region has several famous seafood dishes including lulas com ferrado. The Portuguese dish is made with squid, potatoes, garlic, white wine and parsley and it’s a local delicacy.

Razor clams are also popular while expats will also get used to salt cod fried in flour and topped with onions.

Christopher added: “The city is also located within the stunning protected wetland, Ria Formosa Natural Park.

“Faro’s property market is robust, driven by domestic and international demand. Coastal areas like Albufeira and Vilamoura are particularly sought after, offering apartments, townhouses and even villas with sea views.”

A former fishing village, Albufeira has since become a leading tourist destination and it’s the starting point for many of the region’s dolphin watching boat trips.

Vilamoura is one of the region’s most upmarket resorts and tourists will find posh bars, boutiques and beach clubs at the popular spot.
