Car rust can quickly spread and compromise a vehicle’s structural integrity, but a team of auto experts has outlined five strategies to remain steps ahead of this defect’s costly repairs.
A YouTube video outlined the advice, with its first tip recommending drivers clear their car’s drain holes.
These holes referenced in Auto Doc’s (@autodocuk) YouTube video tutorial are water drainage channels located in:
-
The corners of a car’s sunroof
-
A windshield’s bottom corners
-
The cowl (the area between the base of a car’s windshield and hood)
-
Door sills
-
Trunks
-
Tailgates or hatches
-
Fender wells
Dirt and other debris can clog these drainage holes, increasing the likelihood of car rust and damage to other vehicle components like electronics.
Auto Doc’s following recommendation urges drivers to wash their car’s exterior regularly.
The auto experts add that washing your vehicle during winter is especially important, given that road surfaces can contain deicing chemicals during cold weather, rusting a car’s exterior.
Wheel arches and door mouldings are one of the most vital areas to wash, given their tendency to attract rust.
New cars feature an anti-corrosion coating on their underbody and wheel wells, losing effectiveness over time.

But spraying your car’s underbody with a new anti-corrosion coating revitalizes the area.
Bodywork can also accumulate rust, often within a bonnet and door edges.
Auto Doc experts suggest repairing body paint chips by applying a degreaser with a microfiber towel and letting the solution dry.
Drivers with bodywork rust down to their car’s metal would apply primer, wait for it to dry, and paint over it using a small touch-up brush pen matching their exterior’s color.
