UK motorways: Highways England warns drivers of speed limits
New driving law changes set to be introduced later in 2023 may require “increased penalties” and new fines over fears motorists may break the rules, according to a leading expert.
Graham Conway, Managing Director of Select Car Leasing has warned road users may get frustrated by new speed limit changes and could tailgate other drivers.
They warn driving too closely to other vehicles can present “significant dangers” on the roads and feel tougher sanctions may be required.
It comes after Transport for London (TfL) revealed eight boroughs will be issued new 20mph restrictions within months.
In total a whopping 65 km of new restrictions will be implemented in popular areas such as Greenwich and Kensington

Conway explained: “However, there are concerns these lowered speed limits may inadvertently lead to an increase in tailgating incidents.
“Tailgating, the practice of driving too closely behind another vehicle, can pose significant dangers on the road. It reduces the driver’s reaction time and increases the likelihood of rear-end collisions, which can have devastating consequences.
“Drivers frustrated by these lowered speed limits may choose to tailgate when confronted with lower speed limits. These drivers might feel compelled to tailgate to pressure the vehicle in front to speed up.
“To mitigate the risk of increased tailgating, authorities should step up their efforts in policing this dangerous behaviour. Stricter enforcement measures, including increased penalties and more visible policing, can act as deterrents and discourage drivers from tailgating.
“Public awareness campaigns can also play a vital role in raising awareness about the dangers of tailgating and the importance of maintaining a safe following distance.”

According to the RAC, motorists who are caught tailgating are likely to be slapped with a £100 fine and three penalty points on a driving licence.
Cases can usually be dealt with at the roadside but in severe cases can land road users in more hot water.
The breakdown group stresses tailgating can result in road users being issued a driving ban or custodial sentence in some severe cases.
According to TfL, speed limits are being cut after research highlighted the possible safety benefits. Apparently, speed was a factor in a whopping 48 percent of fatal crashes in the capital in 2020 alone.
Despite the concern, Mr Conway still threw his support behind the programme.
He commented: “Lowering speed limits can significantly reduce the severity of accidents and save lives, particularly among pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists – the most vulnerable road users… Lowering speed limits can bring about several benefits.
“It allows drivers more time to react to unexpected situations, reduces the severity of accidents, and decreases the likelihood of accidents happening in the first place.”
