Nestled off Greece’s Peloponnese coast, the serene island of Agistri beckons with pristine beaches, clear waters and a tranquil retreat from busy Athens.

Popular with outdoor enthusiasts, the island offers activities such as hiking, cycling, sailing, kayaking and horseback riding.

Rarely known by non-Greeks, Agistri offers an idyllic escape with only three villages on the island; Skala, Megalochori, and Limenaria.

From Athens to Agistri, daily ferries depart from the port of Piraeus making the island easily reachable from the Greek capital.

Empty of cars and offering limited nightlife, mainland Greeks head to Agistri for much-needed tranquillity.

Milos is the primary residential area, while Skala stands out as the most developed resort and the central hub for tourists.

The islands boast a population of less than a thousand inhabitants, with accommodations for around the same number of visitors.

Once on the islands, the scenery is breathtaking with flowing hills, large areas dedicated to citrus and olive fields and the rest shrouded in dense pine forest.

One visitor recalled in a Tripadvisor review posted last year: “In the 90’s I spent three weeks on Agistri, two years running. I loved it so much.

“I preferred it to Aegina (which was very much busier) as it was small and relatively low-key. Lovely restaurants and in Skala at that time, at least eight or nine, plus a couple of bars, so not deserted!

“The beaches are lovely, the sea clean and inviting and Liminaria, at the other end of the island, was stunning. English was widely spoken so no worries there.

“I went in May both times and swam in the sea most days. In September the sea will be considerably warmer & will be lovely. Writing this makes me realise I need to go back!”

They added: “P.S. I realise a lot may have changed over the years but it was a very pretty relaxed island and I can’t imagine it will be hugely different.”
