Tensions have heightened in the EU-UK Brexit negotiations regarding Gibraltar, with Spain advocating for the joint use of the territory’s airport by both Madrid and London.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares underscored the significance of incorporating the airport into the agreement, stressing its positive impact on the local population, tourism, and international relations.

As discussions unfold in London this week, Albares expressed concern about the exclusion of the airport, deeming it counterproductive.

He argued that it would be “absurd” for Spanish and other EU airlines to be unable to use the Gibraltar airport.

He said: “What sense would it make to leave out an element as beneficial to the population as the airport? I think it is a step forward that flights can come from Spanish airports and from other European countries to promote tourism and relations.”

While optimistic about a resolution, Albares cautioned that the outcome is not solely within his control, emphasising Spain’s dedication to the ongoing negotiations.

During a late November meeting with his British counterpart David Cameron, Albares highlighted the urgency of reaching a pact on Gibraltar before the upcoming EU elections next year, as reported by EFE.

The demand for shared airport use introduces a new layer of complexity to the negotiations, and the world is closely monitoring developments in this latest Brexit dispute between Spain and the UK.

The negotiations continue against the backdrop of broader discussions on Gibraltar’s post-Brexit future.

Albares believes that incorporating the airport as a shared facility would not only be practical but also contribute positively to the region’s economic and diplomatic ties.
