Russian authorities have blamed sabotage for explosions that have hit trains in the Buryatia region. State investigators have opened a criminal case declaring the incident a “terrorist attack.”

The blast occurred on November 30 and hit a train consisting of carriages carrying fuel. The crew reported the explosion took place as the train entered a tunnel. Later holes were discovered in two of the tanks the train was transporting, according to Russia media reports.

The blasts is said to have seriously damaged the rails but left the train still operational. It comes after another train was blown up in the same area which saw four tanks consumed in a blaze.

According to local reports, the incident sparked a fuel spill that covered some 150 square meters.
