Ben Habib says ‘Rwanda was never going to work’

Rishi Sunak has been told the Tories’ Rwanda plan is a “red herring” which is “never going to work” on the day recently appointed Home Secretary James Cleverly faces a crunch meeting with Conservative backbenchers on the subject.

The Prime Minister has been urged to “stop dreaming up ever more elaborate schemes” and instead focus on one simple strategy, namely stopping the boats.

More than 20,000 people have attempted the hazardous journey across the English Channel so far this year, according to official Government figures.

The controversial proposal, which would see failed asylum seekers flown to Africa on specially chartered planes, has been bogged down by legal challenges ever since it was launched by Suella Braverman, Mr Cleverly’s predecessor, last year.

A ruling by the Supreme Court earlier this month that the proposal is unlawful has seen the UK Government look at measures aimed at satisfying the judges’ concerns.

Mr Sunak has been urged by party colleagues, including Ms Braverman, whom he sacked on November 7, to adopt tough legislation that includes “notwithstanding” clauses that can prevent judges from applying protections in the Human Rights Act and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) to asylum cases.

However, Reform UK deputy leader Ben Habib has said whatever was eventually decided, the plan was fundamentally unworkable.

Posting on X, Mr Habib said: “It is crystal clear, only Reform UK’s 6-point plan will stop the boats.”

He added: “Of the six-point plan @reformparty_uk has to stop the boats, there is one central point.

“STOP THE BOATS AND SEND THEM BACK TO FRANCE.

“Not dream up ever elaborate schemes for deportation or squandering money on the French.”

Mr Habib also shared a clip of his appearance on TalkTV yesterday, during which he said he described the Rwanda scheme as “the politics of distraction”.

He added: “Rwanda was never ever going to work.
