Luis Alfredo Garavito's body has been stuck in a morgue for almost 40 days since he passed away on 12th October. Before his death, he was serving a whopping 1,853-year prison sentence for the murder of 132 young victims.<\/p>\n
Garavito was nabbed in April 1999 and kept in solitary confinement at La Tramacua prison in Valledupar, Colombia, due to fears other inmates might kill him. In the same year, he confessed to the horrific crimes of raping and torturing children and teenagers in his home country, and was found guilty of murdering 138 of them.<\/p>\n

Garavito's body has been left to decay in a fridge for the past month, to the annoyance of his family.<\/p>\n

The family's lawyer, Gabriel Alfonso Beltran, revealed that Garavito's nephew provided all necessary documents to prove their relation so they could claim his body.<\/p>\n
Even though they didn't have enough money to cover all the costs, they hoped to soon receive his ashes as their local mayor offered to pay all the funeral expenses.<\/p>\n
Yet, the body of the murderer, known as 'The Beast', remained at the morgue.<\/p>\n
Now his family are alleging that authorities are trying to sabotage his burial and deny them the basic human right to mourn Garavito.<\/p>\n
After several delays, the cremation had been set for November 18 but was later cancelled.<\/p>\n

The Prosecutor's Office denied any attempts to sabotage the process, blaming the delay on "problems at the funeral home". <\/p>\n
Silvio Cuello, a city representative from Valledupar, warned that the decaying body could pose a biohazard risk.<\/p>\n
However, many online users argued that Garavito didn't even deserve a burial. <\/p>\n
He faced charges related to 172 minors, but 32 cases were still under investigation. Local media suggest that based on maps of skeletons he drew while in prison, his victim count could exceed 300.<\/p>\n
His sentence was cut down to 22 years due to his cooperation and Colombia's ban on life imprisonment. He would have been up for parole in 2023.<\/p>\n
One Facebook user, called Hector Avellaneda, commented: "You can throw the body in the trash!" <\/p>\n
