The Moon is the key to solving the energy crisis, a geography boffin reckons.<\/p>\n

Bestselling author Tim Marshall says humanity is set to spend more time mining the lunar surface \u2013 predicting it will be the next space race. He believes nations will be in \u201cpursuit of the metals we need to create renewable energy\u201d.<\/p>\n

The expert said, writing for The Times: \u201cAs well as rare earth metals, there is also the potential on the moon to extract helium-3 which, unlike the helium-4 found on Earth, could be used to make radiation-free nuclear energy when we finally work out the formula for nuclear fission. It is not a question of should we mine on the Moon \u2013 we will \u2013 but more how, legally and ethically, we do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ouyang Ziyuan \u2013 chief scientist of the Chinese lunar exploration programme \u2013 reckons there is enough to \u201csolve humanity\u2019s energy demand for around 10,000 years\u201d. The US is plotting to land a woman and a man on the moon in 2025 and have a lunar base by the end of the decade. The Americans also want to mine the surface in the early 2030s.<\/p>\n

They are battling China, whose first crewed landing is not expected until about 2030.<\/p>\n

Tim, a former presenter for Sky News, continued: \u201cFor billions of years it was bombarded by meteorites, which may have excavated metals from under the surface. Some proven deposits are near the lunar south pole, where there are also huge quantities of water ice.<\/p>\n
