The Chief Inspector of Prisons, Charlie Taylor wrote in his report that the place does not have \u201cenough staff\u201d and that prisoners were crammed into \u201covercrowded and squalid conditions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>And he confirmed that \u201cthere had also been, almost unbelievably, an escape by a prisoner supposedly under constant supervision.\u201d The report ranked the prison on four categories \u2013 safety, respect, purposeful activity and preparation for release.<\/p>\n<p><b>READ MORE: Female teacher who slept with pupil, 12, and gave birth to his baby is jailed<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>For more prison news, click here.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk\/incoming\/article31460815.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615b\/0_Bedford-prison-unrest.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>It ranked poor in all but the latter, which was marked as being \u201cnot sufficiently good\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The notice report reads: \u201cThree-quarters of the prisoners lived in overcrowded conditions. Most spent more than 22 hours a day locked in their cells. The wings were dirty and there was a widespread infestation of rats and cockroaches. Some cells had broken windows and black mould on the walls.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The escape of a prisoner who was meant to be subject to constant supervision in July 2022 highlighted substantial weaknesses in security. The local security strategy remained incomplete after it had been deleted by a previous manager. But went on to claim that the issues were \u201csystemic\u201d and that fixing them wouldn&apos;t be so easy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will need to be a coordinated and sustained effort from national as well as local leaders to effect meaningful change at the prison,\u201d it added.
