British volunteer fighting for Ukraine posts poignant Armistice Day message

Concerns linger within the EU about Hungary potentially vetoing support for Ukraine, as unanimous approval from all member states is required for disbursements from the shared EU budget.

But EU officials have revealed that contingency plans are in place in case Hungary exercises its veto power to block the intended €50 billion (£43.7 billion) aid package for Ukraine.

The EU Commission aims to enhance assistance to Ukraine amidst the ongoing 21-month war. The 27 member states are set to vote on the proposed package during an upcoming summit. Sources indicate that the EU has devised a potential “workaround” to address this scenario.

According to two anonymous EU officials speaking to Sky News, individual member states could establish their own aid agreements with Kyiv, collectively reaching the earmarked financial amount. While acknowledging the workaround as cumbersome, one official assured that the issue of financial aid for Ukraine will be resolved, emphasising that Kyiv will receive EU support one way or another.

In the event of Hungary impeding unanimity through the EU budget, member states are prepared to explore alternatives, such as intergovernmental agreements or national guarantees.

Hungary has previously vetoed a similar proposal to allocate €18 billion in financial assistance to Ukraine in 2023, which was eventually accepted after prolonged negotiations.
