Icelandic volcano erupts in molten inferno

Tourists are fleeing Iceland’s world-renowned “Blue Lagoon” geothermal spa following earthquakes that rattled the area.

The spa at the lagoon has been temporarily closed due to concerns about a volcanic eruption.

The ‘Blue Lagoon’ Resort and Spa announced on its website: “‘Blue Lagoon’ has proactively decided to temporarily suspend operations for one week, despite the authorities not altering the current level of uncertainty during this period of seismic activity.”

It is scheduled to be closed until November 16.

The announcement alarmed at least 40 guests, who were observed entering taxis and departing from the resort, as reported by the Icelandic newspaper Vikurfrettir.

Over 20,000 tremors have been identified by the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) since late October, with 1,400 occurring within the 24-hour period leading up to midday on Thursday.

This escalated geological activity prompted the temporary closure of the renowned Blue Lagoon as a safety measure.

The seismic events are concentrated in the southwestern Reykjanes Peninsula, which had remained dormant for eight centuries prior to a volcanic eruption in 2021.

According to the IMO, molten rock, or magma, is accumulating at a depth of approximately five kilometers (three miles) northwest of Thorbjorn mountain.

The Blue Lagoon is easily observable from this mountain.

The IMO also reported the detection of a 5.0 magnitude earthquake, the most significant event since the heightened seismic activity commenced. This earthquake occurred shortly after midnight on Thursday in the Fagradalsfjall volcanic area, situated roughly 30 kilometers from the capital city of Reykjavik.
