Israel could be just 24 hours from unleashing a ground offensive on Hamas terrorists in Gaza.

And leading that charge could well be an elite unit that once featured the country's current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. For many, this will be the first time you would have heard of Sayeret Matkal – and that's the point.

The group is one of the most elite special forces troops at Israel's disposal, but it is also one of the most feared. It answers directly to the Israel Defense Forces leader, based at the IDF General Staff Headquarters Special Operations Division in Southern Israel, and could be brought in to rescue the more than 140 hostages held in Gaza . . . a job made much more difficult by the claims that they have all been split up and spread all over the country.

It was formed in 1957 after the previous – and the country's first – special forces, Unit 101, was disbanded.

Since then, it has been involved in some of the country's biggest wars, and wins, from the Yom Kippur War to the 2014 Gaza War. And its list of former commanders includes the aforementioned Netanyahu, as well as his brother Yonatan, and another former Israeli PM in Ehud Barak.

There methods, in particular a rescue of hostages from Ugandan soldiers, is seen as a blueprint for operations is studied by counter-terrorism specialists all over the world.

And now one of its current reserve members, Eyal Biran, has exposed some how the group is trained, as much as he can given he admits it'll probably get him in a lot of trouble.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Biran said: “The calibre of the Matkal's recruits, the quality of its training and the respect for tradition that binds its men, makes our unit Israel's most formidable military asset – if any unit is capable of meeting this challenge, it is the Sayeret Matkal, with its background in counter terrorism, hostage rescue and intelligence gathering.

“As part of the initial selection process, applicants attend a brutally demanding camp called Gibbush, where gruelling exercises include crawling up hills, carrying sandbags painfully long distances and hanging from a bar until the blood drains from the head.

“But it is not just physical fitness the Matkal is looking for as recruits undergo severe mental conditioning, with interviews and aptitude tests designed to assess and promote their leadership qualities. They then undergo two years of intensive training that covers everything from disposing of land mines to using small arms and delivering emergency medical aid.

Putin's troops 'confused' as Russians seen shooting each over in night assault

“The toughest part comes in the final fortnight, when the recruits endure a stint in simulated captivity, deprived of sleep, physically beaten, threatened and humiliated – after this, they are transported to a remote desert location where they are left to survive alone with no help and no safety net.

“The rigours of this training regime produces men — and so far all recruits have been men — exceptionally well-equipped to serve their country in the face of unimaginable horrors.”

Biran goes on the state that rescuing the hostage is now their most "challenging task".

He added: "By now, they may have been split into small groups and taken to a range of locations. Freeing them alive will be the hardest part of their mission as Hamas's psychopathic fighters have no interest in negotiation, only in intimidation and killing."

And as Netanyahu contemplates starting the ground invasion, he may well turn to this well-trained elite group to help him do it.
