    More than 100 people have been killed in a lethal terror rocket strike in Israel, while 198 Palestinian deaths have been recorded as a result of the country's response.<\/p>\n

    Missiles hit a number of settlements in south and central Israel after an attack was launched by the militant group Hamas. The organisation, recognised as terrorists by the UK and a number of other countries, claim more than 5000 rockets have been launched today (Saturday, October 7), while other estimates place the figure closer to 2200.<\/p>\n

    Ground troops have also entered Israel through Gaza. <\/p>\n

    Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the country was now at war after an emergency meeting was called with top security bosses. Netanyahu took to X today to issue a statement, simply captioned: "We are at war."<\/p>\n

    Mohammad Deif, a senior Hamas military commander, launched "Operation Al-Aqsa Storm" today. He said: "This is the day of the greatest battle end the last occupation on earth," and called for fighters to "set the earth on fire under the feet of the occupiers."<\/p>\n

    In response Israel has now launched what it called "Operation Sword of Iron" in response to Hamas' attack.<\/p>\n

    Emergency sirens wailed throughout some of Israel's major cities, including Jerusalem, today \u2013 the final day of the Jewish High Holidays. Photos taken across the country including in Tel Aviv show civilian property damaged. Red alerts are in place in several areas.<\/p>\n

    Officials added at least 1,610 people had been injured in the strikes.<\/p>\n

    Israel's Defense Forces (IDF) said Palestinian terrorist group Hamas "had begun a massive shooting of rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory". A spokesman said: "A number of terrorists have infiltrated into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n

    "The Israeli Defence Forces will defend Israeli civilians and the Hamas terrorist organization will pay heavy price for its actions."<\/p>\n

    Meanwhile Mohammad Deif, a senior Hamas military commander, took to the group's media channels to call on Palestinians to join what he called "Operation Al-Aqsa Storm". He said: "This is the day of the greatest battle end the last occupation on earth," and called for fighters to "set the earth on fire under the feet of the occupiers."<\/p>\n

    The strike marks the most significant unrest between Israel and Hamas since a 10-day war back in 2021. Videos posted to social media showed gunmen arriving into the country on trucks, with clips showing armed fighters driving through the countryside on jeeps. Others reportedly used parachutes to enter.<\/p>\n
