Dramatic new maps show a dip in the mercury once October’s early and short-lived heat spike gives way.

UK long-range weather forecasts suggest October’s warm beginning will plunge just beyond the mid-month. Britons will welcome some early autumn heat this weekend as temperatures rise back into the 20C range.

Charts show highs up to 23C and 24C for much of southern England, with temperatures close to 20C across the other home nations on Saturday, October 7.

The maps also suggest the weekend highs will start a trend of on-and-off-again heat, with the country occasionally returning to similar temperatures until October 14.

But, beyond then, long-range forecasts show the arrival of a cold snap that won’t be nearly as pleasant, with autumn tipped to make a sudden mid-month debut.
