King Charles III is said to have a "strategic need" to reconcile with son Prince Harry amid talk the royal wants to return to the UK – but he won't be apologising any time soon.

A former employee and friend who allegedly worked for the King at Buckingham Palace, told The Daily Beast that Charles has a “strategic need to resolve the issue” of Harry and Meghan Markle's estrangement from the family. They said the King being on bad terms with his son was "not sustainable" for the royals.

The past few years have seen a huge amount of tension for the Royal Family following comments made by Prince Harry in his memoir Spare, published earlier this year. There were similar remarks made in an explosive interview with Oprah in 2021 and in Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, released last year.

“It’s not sustainable for the king, who is the national symbol of unity, to be on such bad terms with his son that they haven’t been pictured together in years," the source said. "Ultimately Charles has not just a personal but also a strategic need to resolve the issue.”

They added: "It has been reported that Charles wants an apology from Harry, but that’s far from the case. [Charles] wouldn’t expect that. He knows the Windsors are a stubborn lot and Harry is no exception.”

"The quid-pro-quo is, can Harry accept that he won’t be getting an apology either?" they continued. "Don’t forget that Charles authorised Jonathan Dimbleby to write a book which attacked his parents, but ultimately they all basically forgot about it, chalked it down to experience and moved on. Charles wants to hit the reset button – but not at any price.”

But Harry has expressed a different take on the matter, clearly indicating his desire for an apology from the Royal Family. As part of interviews to promote his tell-all book, Spare, Harry said he wanted “accountability” from the royals.

The Duke of Suussex has been reported to want a "private apology" from both brother Prince William and father King Charles as a way of ending the "toxic stalemate" the fractured family found themselves in after Harry's book release.

“The way I see it is, I’m willing to forgive you [the royal family] for everything you’ve done, and I wish you’d actually sat down with me, properly, and instead of saying I’m delusional and paranoid, actually sit down and have a proper conversation about this, because what I’d really like is some accountability," he said in an interview with the Telegraph.

"And an apology to my wife.”
