If you fancy an extreme holiday in 2023, a little-known Wigan-based travel firm might be your best call.
Lupine Travel provides tours to some of the world’s most dangerous, and interesting, destinations.
The firm’s trips focus on history and culture, including one to war-torn Syria, where holidaymakers are taken to the Roman World Heritage site of Palmyra, which was seized in 2016 by Islamic State militants.

It has also offered trips to North Korea, one of the most secretive states in the world, and Chernobyl, in Ukraine, the site of the worst nuclear accident in history in 1986.
Its newest tour to hardline Saudi Arabia sees travellers being taken to Dadan – a city dating back to 9th century BC trade routes.
Lupine’s founder Dylan Harris said: “Our ethos is to create unique experiences and open up travel to seldom-visited regions of the world, whilst making it affordable.
“We try to break down barriers of often misunderstood countries and regions by showing the human side and creating connections between vastly different cultures.’’

And Dylan insists there have been no issues since Lupine launched 14 years ago. He said: “For some destinations such as Syria and Iraq, there’s no getting away from the fact that parts of these countries are extremely dangerous and not suitable in any way for tourists.
“The safety aspect of our tours is something we take very seriously. Gaining access to these countries can be a long, laborious process. Some will take years of planning.’’

He stressed the trips are not for “voyeuristic war tourism’’.
Dylan added: “Clear your mind of all the preconceptions that you have of these destinations and take a chance for what will certainly be the most memorable trip you’ve ever taken.”
