UK Covid cases soar by 4,926 in highest daily rise on a Tuesday since April

The UK's number of coronavirus cases has shot up by almost 5,000 in a single day, the highest daily rise on a Tuesday since April.

A total of 4,926 new infections were confirmed by health officials.

Earlier today, it was announced 29 people had died in the nation's hospitals – the highest increase in nearly two months.

Of those, 28 were in England and one was in Scotland.

It is the biggest daily death toll increase since Saturday, July 11, when 29 died.

Tuesday's figures are also the highest daily numbers since May 7.

On Monday, 4,368 coronavirus cases were confirmed and 11 deaths reported.

Today's data takes the overall number of confirmed UK cases to 403,551.
