Prince William left Kate stricken after breaking up with her over phone

Prince William left Kate Middleton "pacing" up and down before she "disappeared" for the day after he broke up with her over the phone.

Despite the couple’s happy marriage today – which has lasted over a decade – it hasn’t always been like that.

After meeting at St Andrews University in Scotland and graduating together in 2005, the Duke went into the military whilst Kate took work as an accessories buyer, reports The Mirror.

But just two years later, when the couple were both in their mid-20s, their relationship took a turn for the worse.

Whilst Kate was at work, she took a phone call from William in which he told her he didn’t want to see her any longer.

One of her former colleagues told the outlet they saw Kate take the call in the office car park in London.

They said: "It was clear it was William – and definitely a tiff.

"Around the middle of the day, she was pacing the car park outside the office on her mobile.

"A few people noticed because it's a pretty unusual thing to do. She'd deliberately gone outside to take the call because she didn't want to be overheard.

"Kate was walking up and down and looking upset as if she was having an argument. But she didn't cry. Word went round that it was William and they were having problems.

"When she came back to the office she didn't say a thing and disappeared for the rest of the day.”

But royal author Robert Lacey claims the split only lasted 10 weeks.

The insider wrote in his book Battle of the Brothers that William has yearning for Kate and her family and he missed her too much.

"They could suss out the truth about where his heart lay, even if he himself could not."

Since the royal pair got back together, they’ve gone on to have three charming kids and made the union official at Westminster Abbey in April 2011.
