Procter & Gamble Co. Tuesday recalled more than a dozen products from its Old Spice and Secret brands, after benzene, a cancer-causing agent, was detected.
The recall notice lists 17 aerosol spray antiperspirants and Old Spice Below Deck aerosol spray products with expiry through September 2023.
“Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin and it can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening,” the notice said.
The company said the benzene levels detected were unlikely to cause health issues, and that it was conducting the recall “out of an abundance of caution”. It added that it had not received any reports of adverse effects.
Procter & Gamble Co. is asking people to throw out any affected products, and to receive reimbursement by filling out an online form or contacting the hotline on 888-339-7689 Monday through Friday from 9 am to 6 pm ET.
