Matt Lucas orders XXL trousers after being named Great British Bake Off co-host

Cake-loving Matt Lucas has ordered some XXL trousers after signing up as the new co-host of The Great British Bake Off.

The Little Britain star will replace Sandi Toksvig in the new series which launches this autumn.

Matt – who will co-present the show with Noel Fielding – said: “I’m chuffed to bits to be joining the most delicious show on television.”

And he joked he has taken steps to compensate for his expanding waistline trying out all the bakers’ treats adding: “Bearing in mind my love of cake, I’ve already ordered some much larger trousers in anticipation.

“If my mum came along she would just follow me around going ‘Matt. Don’t eat that!”’

Noel was instrumental in helping to pick Matt as his new sidekick, and added: “I love Matt.

“I love his warmth and his comedy and his big joyful smile.

“I think if we play our cards right we could become the next Chas and Morph.”

Channel 4 is understood to have put the ex-Doctor Who and Come Fly With Me star at the top of their wish list to replace Sandi who has quit to focus on new TV projects.

They believe he and Noel will create “mischief and mayhem” in the TV tent.

Fans will know Matt’s Little Britain character – Fat Fighters group leader Marjorie Dawes – often used to shout “Cake. Cake. Ooh man. Love the cake!”

TV judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith are also thrilled by the new addition.

Prue said: “Will we stop laughing and get any filming done?”

Channel 4’s director of programmes Ian Katz said: “Matt has everything it takes. He’s warm, hilarious … and loves cake.”
