Animal lovers have been left devastated after a famous gay flamingo couple decided to split up during Pride month.
Freddie Mercury and Lance Bass hit global headlines when Denver Zoo announced in 2019 that the birds had been shacked up for five years.
At the time the Colorado facility said that while the lovers wouldn't be able to have a chick of their own, they would be able to become surrogate parents.

But their love story has sadly come to an end, which has caused their heartbroken fans to flock to Facebook.
On June 23, the Denver Zoo said in a Pride Month post: "While our famed, same-sex couple Chilean flamingo Lance Bass and American flamingo Freddie Mercury are no longer a pair, they were paired up for several years.
"Our flock is 75 birds strong, which allows our birds to flamingle with a variety of individuals and personalities, giving them many options on who to form associations with."
However, the zoo seems to have ruffled some feathers, with loyal followers calling them out for not being alerted to the break up sooner.
In response, the facility said the following day: "It seems like our flamingo post yesterday may have ruffled some feathers and we want to sincerely apologize… for leaving everyone in the dark so long as to why our same-sex flamingo pair Freddie Mercury and Lance Bass split up!"

"Please rest assured that both Freddie and Lance are in good health, weren't separated and their break up was amicable.
"Mating for life isn't necessarily true for all birds, and our keepers have noticed that some birds in long-term relationships sometimes decide to move on and pair up with other birds."
Denver Zoo added that Freddie has since paired with a fourteen-year-old female American flamingo called Lommi.
While Lane is yet to make a "concrete bond with anyone else".
