Fisherman survived two days at sea by hanging on to buoy after falling off boat

A man was found clinging on a buoy for two days after falling off his boat at Christmas Day.

Fisherman David Soares, 43, was reported missing when his boat was found floating in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Brazil.

He miraculously survived the accident by staying on top of a buoy in the middle of nowhere.

Two days later, he was spotted by other fishemen who filmed a video of him staying on top of the cylindrical post.

David, who is known as "Leandro" by his local fishing community, told Brazilian news portal G1 as he recalled the unbelievable experience.

He explained he went out on December 25 at Atafona beach to work alone but ended up falling off his vessel.

"For me, the first 10 minutes were the most difficult because I wanted to get to the vessel at all costs," he said.

"But it's really an enormous weight of water, there was no way to swim against it."

David then came up with a survival plan and removed all his clothes to take the weight off him.

So he drifted on sea to conserve his energy rather than swimming against the tide.

He ended up at signal buoy around eight kilometres from where his boat was.

"There was swell, wind," David continued.

"I decided to let the waters take me to use less strength and 'walk' faster. And it took me about four hours swimming to get to Porto do Acu, on the buoys."

"Many times I thought I was going to die of cold until help arrived."

His family and friends had called in the Navy and coast guards to search for him after their colleague found his boat.

David stayed on the buoy for 48 hours before another fisherman took him to land.

He was then sent to hosptial and treated for dehydration.

The fisherman is now back at sea again but he is now more cautious, adding: "I had the second opportunity to face life with different eyes and to be a better man."
