A vile killer who brutally murdered serving Kent Police community support officer Julia James has been sentenced to life in prison at Canterbury Crown Court today (July 8).

PCSO Julia, 53, was beaten to death as she walked her Jack Russell dog Toby in Ackholt Wood near her home in Snowdown, Kent, in April last year.

Callum Wheeler was found guilty of her murder in a trial in May this year after previously admitting to killing her but denying murder.

He will serve a minimum term of 37 years before he is eligible for early release.

The jury of eight women and four men heard that Wheeler “hit her head repeatedly” with a railway jack and “intended to cause her at least really serious harm”.

Wheeler was described by the prosecutor as a “highly sexualised” prolific user of internet pornography, who had searched for words including “raped” just two days before the attack.

She said Wheeler planned to target a lone woman and was “lying in wait in bushes” for “highly respected PCSO” Mrs James, who made a “desperate attempt to run away”.

After his arrest, Wheeler reportedly told officers "sometimes I do things that I cannot control" before adding that his victim had deserved to die.

He also said if he was released he would back into the woods to 'rape and kill women.'

While being sentenced today, Wheeler was carried into the dock by psychiatric staff of HMP Broadmoor, who flanked him while the verdict was released.

At all times Wheeler sat motionless in the courtroom, staring at the floor while the court heard heartwrenching victim statements from Julia's family.

Julia's husband Paul described how the cruel and vicious way in which Julia had been taken from him meant he felt dead.

He said: "My hopes and dreams were taken. I truly felt I died too.

“My life has been jolted by the devastation and trauma.

“We went everywhere together. How do I do these things alone?"

Meanwhile, Julia's son Patrick said Wheeler was a "sick, twisted individual."

Sentencing the monster, Mr Justice Wall told Wheeler: “Your actions have not just served to end the one life prematurely but have also destroyed the lives of the whole of her family.

“I am drawn on the evidence to the obvious conclusion that this was a not a spur of the moment aberration by you.

“Rather it was an attack which was planned and thought through in advance.”

He added: “The attack you launched on her was brutal and vicious.

"You were there looking for a lone female victim and you were sexually motivated to do so.”
