Elon Musk accuses the FBI of ‘overreaching’ in attempt to ‘censor’ Twitter

Twitter chief Elon Musk has appeared to suggest the FBI censors Twitter, in just the latest of his increasingly erratic tweets.

Musk was replying to a tweet from Collin Rugg, who claims to have been "banned from Twitter for supporting Trump" and tweeted: "REPORT: Conservative Twitter accounts are apparently being suspended for speaking out against Zelensky’s speech last night. Is the FBI still working at Twitter @elonmusk?"

The Tesla CEO replied: "To be clear, I am overall very much pro FBI. The agency does a great deal of important work protecting the public. That said, no organization is perfect and part of the FBI obviously overreached with respect to online censorship."

There is no evidence that the FBI has tried to ban accounts.

Since taking over Twitter, Elon Musk has presided over a tumultuous few months, frequently taking executive decisions about the running of Twitter before backtracking hours later.

His focus on Twitter has concerned shareholders of car giant Tesla, and has seen the value of the company plummet over the past few months over fears that Twitter is taking up too much of his time.

Many were skeptical of his most recent exchange.

"Dude, do you even have like a source?" once user wrote, while another jokingly tweeted: "Is MI6 still working in the BBC and pubs?"

Musk has consistently said he wants to increase "free speech" on the micro-blogging site but was roundly criticised last week after suspending some journalists from the site, accusing them of revealing his real time location.

Meanwhile he said he would be stepping down as CEO of twitter "once he finds a replacement" after conducting a poll asking users whether he should continue as the head of the company or not.

Though given his recent track record on changing his mind, few would be surprised if he U-turned again on his latest pledge.

Yesterday, a new feature was added to the website showing how many views each tweet gets.

"Twitter is rolling out View Count, so you can see how many times a tweet has been seen! This is normal for video. Shows how much more alive Twitter is than it may seem, as over 90% of Twitter users read, but don’t tweet, reply or like, as those are public actions," Musk said.
