A Death Row killer apologised to his victim's family and told the warden "I am ready to go" in his final words.

John Henry Ramirez, 38, was executed by lethal injection on Wednesday (October 5) at the Texas state's death chamber in Huntsville.

Ramirez was sentenced to death over the killing of Pablo Castro, 46, in Corpus Christi in 2004. He murdered the supermarket worker by stabbing him 29 times.

Ramirez was pronounced dead at 6.41pm local time, but not before he gave his final statement.

He addressed the victim's family (four of Castro's children were present) as well as his wife who was there for his final moments.

He said: “I just want to say to the family of Pablo Castro, I appreciate everything that y’all did to try and communicate with me through the Victim’s Advocacy program.

“I tried to reply back, but there is nothing that I could have said or done that would have helped you. I have regret and remorse, this is such a heinous act. I hope this finds you comfort, if this helps you then I am glad.

“I hope in some shape or form this helps you find closure.

“To my wife, my friends, my son, grasshopper, Dana and homies, I love y’all. Just know that I fought a good fight, and I am ready to go.

“I am ready, warden.”

Following a Supreme Court ruling, a Christian pastor was allowed to be present and lay his hands on Ramirez while praying.

Ramirez was sentenced to death in 2008 for the murder of Castro, a father of nine who worked nights at a convenience store in the southern Texan city of Corpus Christi.

Seeking money to buy drugs, Ramirez fatally stabbed Castro and made off with $1.25 (£1.10) on July 19, 2004.
