Dad proud of student murdered with pals as bruises show ‘tough kid’ put up fight

The dad of a student who was murdered along with her three friends last Sunday (November 13) has hailed his daughter's brave attempt to fight the attacker.

Xana Kernodle, 20, was one of four students at the University of Idaho to be murdered in their home in Moscow, Idaho.

An autopsy completed on Wednesday (November 16) ruled their deaths as a stabbing. It also indicated that Xana had put up a fight.

Speaking to CBS 5, her dad Jeff Kernodle said her skin showed "bruises, torn by the knife".

"She’s a tough kid. Whatever she wanted to do, she could do it," he said.

Xana was killed by an unknown assailant alongside her boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, 20, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, and Madison Mogen, 21, in the early hours of the morning. Their bodies weren't found until 11.30am.

Kernodle questioned how the killer got into the home, adding: "Every time you go, you have to go around the house because of the number code so they either knew that or went around and maybe found the slider door open.

"I think midnight was the last time we heard from her, and she was fine."

Kaylee and Madison lived in the house with Xana, while Ethan was visiting. Two other students lived at the property although it is unclear who alerted authorities.

CCTV footage from the night showed the group interacting with an unidentified male friend while likely intoxicated and buying food from a stand.

Police currently have no suspects at the moment and are still investigating.

They were forced to admit they could not rule out a possible danger to the community, prompting Kaylee's sister to appeal for people to stay safe.

Aubrie Goncalves wrote on Instagram: "No one is in custody and therefore no one is safe. To the students of the University of Idaho that are still staying around campus, leave.

"Your grades are severely less important than your lives.

"You guys are not safe until this sicko is found."
