The news has led to China postponing the Beijing marathon until further notice.  China has enforced travel restrictions in the wake of the outbreak of the Delta variant of coronavirus that is spreading throughout the nation. China has reported more than 133 cases across 11 provinces mostly linked to the highly transmissible Delta variant.

BBC China correspondent Stephen McDonell tweeted: “There are now new travel restrictions for the Chinese capital following the recent coronavirus Delta outbreak in China.

“Internal travel into Beijing has been banned for anyone coming from another area which has covid infections.”

The correspondent added: “The number of new infections being added each day to the official figures is not great but it’s spread to many places.

“Most clusters of infections are being traced back to groups of people travelling in Inner Mongolia and Gansu Province.”
