Boxer who beat two world champions died after ‘falling backwards’ outside pub

A top former boxer who beat two world champions has died outside a pub after a fall.

John Fallon, 63, suffered the tragic accident at the Barham Pub in Bilton Grange, Hull in January.

He was taken to the Hull Royal Infirmary after falling backwards and slamming his head while leaving the boozer.

John, who once beat former world champion Johnny Nelson in a boxing ring, died four months later, and an inquest into his death was held this week.

The inquest heard how he was admitted to hospital after suffering the severe head injury, and had a number of surgeries as a result, Hull Live reports.

Fallon had appeared to be improving at the start of March before his condition deteriorated, and was placed in palliative care before his death.

His partner of more than 21 years, Carole Wilkinson, said: “John was such a lovely man, he was a big man and he made a big impact on the lives of so many people.

“He was strong both physically and in terms of character and he certainly kept me on my toes – he was larger than life and lived it to the full.

“I really believed he was going to get better, but each time he got an infection we lost a little more of him and it got too much in the end.

“He had two children of his own and although he did not see them as much as he would like, he loved being a dad and a granddad, but he was also very close to my children and grandchildren and doted on them.”

John suffered from arthritis, which had made him unsteady and he often fell over, particularly after having a drink. He also had type two diabetes and angina.

But despite this, John “dismissed” links between his issues and his former boxing career.

Lorraine Harris, the area coroner, confirmed that his death was caused by the fall, and that his death was an accident.

She said: “While John died some months later in hospital, I agree that the cause of death was the fall.

“The surgical team did their utmost to help John and he showed incredible character and inner strength to keep fighting.”
