About 650 flights through Denver International Airport were delayed or canceled Monday amid icy conditions and poor visibility, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware.
The flight issues come on the tail end of the peak holiday travel season and just as Denver International Airport was beginning to return to normal operations after Southwest Airlines stranded thousands of passengers across the country in the days around Christmas.
The poor weather conditions will continue through most of the day Monday, according to the National Weather Service at Boulder. Denver saw freezing rain and mist Monday morning and patches of heavy fog, making roads — and runways — slick. Another round of snow is expected Monday afternoon.
About 250 flights were canceled through Denver Monday and another about 400 were delayed, according to FlightAware.
As of 12:50 p.m. Monday, Southwest had canceled 116 flights through Denver and delayed another 140, according to FlightAware. Together, that’s about 45% of its scheduled Denver traffic Monday, according to Flight Aware.
SkyWest canceled 109 flights and delayed 57, about 51% of its daily Denver traffic. United canceled just 7 flights but delayed 151 — 30% of its traffic, according to FlightAware.
Denver’s airport was leading the nation in delays and cancellations Monday, according to FlightAware.
