Around 70 firefighters rush to tower block after reports of ‘explosions’

    Around 70 firefighters and 10 fire engines have scrambled to the scene of a flat fire in south east London after reports of 'explosions'.

    The incident occurred at Warner House on the Orchard Estate in Lewisham early on Tuesday morning (November 22) and has been met with a large response by the emergency services.

    Around 60 people evacuated their properties before fire crews had began to arrive, while others were rescued from their homes by firefighters who used a nine-metre ladder.

    According to the authorities the blaze began in a communal area on the sixth floor of the building.

    The fire brigade received a dozen calls regarding the incident before arriving on the scene shortly before 1am and confirm the inferno was under control within an hour.

    A statement from the London Fire Brigade read: "10 fire engines and around 70 firefighters tackled a flat fire on Russett Way in Lewisham.

    "Part of a communal lobby on the sixth floor was alight. Firefighters led a man and a woman to safety from scaffolding on the building via a nine-metre ladder.

    "Around 60 residents left the property before the Brigade arrived, whilst others remained in their unaffected flats.

    "The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took 12 calls to the blaze. The Brigade was called at 1:53am and the fire was under control by 2:50am.

    "Fire crews from Greenwich, Lewisham, Deptford, Lee Green, New Cross and surrounding fire stations attended the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation."

    A tweet from the fire service also asked people to "avoid the area" while they work to make the scene safe.
