Last night BBC Scotland said Boris Johnson was the “Prime Minister of England”, when he is actually the leader of the whole of the UK. The report has been heavily criticised on social media, with George Galloway among those leading the charge against the corporation’s Scottish branch.

Mr Galloway fumed on Twitter: “Here’s an idea @10DowningStreet pick up the phone to the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the @bbc and tell him: if @BBCScotlandNews refers to you again as the “Prime Minister of England” you will require the Chairman’s resignation.

“Have some self-respect.”

The former MP isn’t the only one to have spotted the BBC’s error, with dozens condemning the description on Twitter.

One person wrote: “BBC Scotland today said Boris Johnson was Prime Minister of England. It’s the final straw.”

Another user said: “Now the BBC in Scotland are promoting Johnson as the prime minister of England. Defund the BBC.”

A third wrote: “@BorisJohnson @10DowningStreet Did you realise that BBC Scotland called you Prime Minister of England?

“I would imagine you will be having a word in their ear.”

Another person simply pointed out: “He is Prime Minister of England….. And Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.”

Dozens of other social media users hit out at the corporation for calling Mr Johnson the wrong title.

One person wrote: “The BBC’s attitude is really offensive to all people who consider themselves British.

“Time they were called to account for it. An apology should be forthcoming.”

A second user said: “It’s really getting ridiculous now.

A third wrote: “Are BBCScotlandnews gone rogue. Or is it the corporation’s agenda?”

Another user said: “One of the reasons to ditch BBC complete.”

It’s not the first time BBC Scotland has referred to Mr Johnson as the Prime Minister of England.

With one person tweeting on Wednesday morning: “@BBCScotlandNews can you tell your newsreader on @BBCBreakfast that @BorisJohnson is the PM of Great Britain and not ‘the Prime Minister of England’.

“Who is writing your nationalist diatribe?”

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has also branded Mr Johnson the “Prime Minister of England” before, as she sought to carve out a different approach to the coronavirus crisis.

The BBC has been approached for comment.
