The poll was published by YouGov and revealed the “disdain” nations in Europe have for each other. One major finding was the reciprocity deficit between the UK and other European nations. UK citizens polled were more willing to give to their EU counterparts in times of crisis.

However, nations on the continent, particularly Germany, France and Italy would not be willing to help the UK if it were on its knees.

The YouGov Twitter account said: “You can see more of the tangled web of inter-European disdain here.

“Britain would help everyone else in a crisis, though most won’t help us.”

The details of the poll suggested only a few nations would help the UK and exposed those that would not.

The YouGov Twitter account read: “Countries that Britons are willing to help in a crisis that are NOT willing to help the UK in a crisis are Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Greece, Finland, Hungary, Lithuania.”

The pollsters then revealed the few EU states that would help the UK in times of crisis.

YouGov tweeted: “Those that WOULD help us are Denmark, Sweden, Poland, and Romania.”

It comes in the wake of the coronavirus crisis which has swept across the globe – as EU leaders battled to finally reach an agreement on its rescue fund.

The poll also marks months since Britain officially left the European Union – with negotiations on a trade deal currently deadlocked. The Brexit transition period will also come to an end at the end of the year.

Speaking of the findings YouGov data journalist Mathew Smith said: “Southern and Eastern European countries are generally more willing to help their neighbours than Northern and Western European countries.”

The data also focused on what EU citizens envisaged for the future of the EU.

The poll asked what EU citizens think of the bloc becoming a top global power.

EU citizens were asked whom they would like to see as the world’s major power.

Across the EU most citizens said they would prefer to see the US as the reigning power.

Most polled wished to see the EU as a more powerful politically and economically than China.

A sizeable majority in each nation of the bloc wanted to see the EU as stepping up and becoming a greater global power.

This survey was published on 3 August.
