The Shadow International Trade Secretary Emily Thornberry has insisted the UK should align to a Swiss-style deal with the European Union but was warned how this would negatively affect British trade by Andrew Marr. Boris Johnson has warned Brussels he will not hesitate to take unilateral measures to protect the position of Northern Ireland in the increasingly bitter row over post-Brexit trading arrangements. The European Commission president expressed her “deep concern” over the implementation of post-Brexit agreements to Mr Johnson and plans to talk further with him at the margins of the summit.

Ms Thornberry said: “What we need to do is to sort out the problems of the protocol and make sure that we are doing everything that we can to support the Good Friday Agreement.

“We need to sort it and part of that is to stop bickering and actually find a practical solution.

“Britain and Europe need to have a veterinary agreement, we need to have an agreement on the export of meat and food across the border and we don’t have it at the moment.”

Asked if she supports the EU offer, Ms Thornberry added: “I personally think that is the most realistic.”

Mr Marr interjected: “Here’s the problem, doing this Swiss-style deal means we have to dynamically align and continue to align with EU standards.

“If we align with EU standards, we can’t do the trade deals with Australia and the United States.”
