Russell was confirmed as Mercedes new driver and Hamilton’s new teammate for 2022 after a series of standout performances with Williams this season. Just a week after taking his first F1 podium at Spa-Francorchamps at the Belgian Grand Prix, the 23-year old shed some light on his first foray into motoring.

Speaking to Jenson Button on Sky Sports F1, Russell revealed his first car was a simple family hot hatch.

Asking quick questions, the 2009 F1 champion Button added: “Your first road car?”

Russell responded: “A VW Polo with 60bhp.

“It famously once got overtaken by a truck on a slight hill.”

He previously spoke about his VW Polo when he was first announced as an F1 driver at the start of the 2019 season.

He said: “My first ever car was a VW Polo. I think it was the slowest version you can ever get.

“The first time I ever drove an F1 car I drove there in my polo.

“About 45 minutes after I finished my test I jumped back in my Polo to go home.

“It was quite a weird feeling. I didn’t have that urge to go flat out.”

Although not confirmed as Russell’s car, Volkswagen’s Polo Hatchback models are capable of 60bhp.

The model has an acceleration of 0-60mph in 15.6 seconds and a top speed of around 120mpg.

Since becoming an F1 star, Russell has swapped the simple road car for something a bit more luxurious.
