Such is the unpredictability that awaits F1 this season that Dutch commenter Jan Lammers says he wouldn’t be surprised if Max Verstappen dominated this season.
But he also wouldn’t be surprised if “Carlos Sainz becomes World Champion”.
No one knows how this year’s championship will play out, it is not even educated guessing given that this year Formula 1 is racing all-new cars.
Verstappen set the pace on the final day of testing in his RB18, the Dutchman seven-tenths up on the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.
Mick Schumacher actually split the two, but did so in Haas’ extra hours of testing with the German half a second slower than the Red Bull driver.
It, however, was all shrouded in secrecy as testing is, none of the teams aware of their rivals’ engine modes or fuel loads – or any other pertinent details.
Lammers is as confused as the rest of us.
“I have said before that I wouldn’t be surprised if Max will dominate this year,” GPBlog quotes him as having told NOS Studio Sport.
“In addition, nothing would surprise me if Carlos Sainz becomes World Champion.”

He added: “One thing is for sure: it’s completely unpredictable.”
Between Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari there have been many a headlines claiming the other had the advantage.
Lewis Hamilton has stated that if the Bahrain Grand Prix was tomorrow “Ferrari would probably be getting a one-two. Maybe Red Bull.”
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner has also talked up Ferrari, saying the Scuderia “had a very strong testing period both in Barcelona and Bahrain. I would say they have looked extremely competitive on track.”
However, Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz is quick to remind everyone that a quick Ferrari in pre-season testing does not mean a quick Ferrari come the season.
“Everyone is impressed like everyone was impressed in ’18, ’19, ’17 and we all know that testing means nothing so I don’t know why people keep falling into the same trap year after year of trying to analyse testing too much,” he said.
“I don’t understand why people keep falling into the same trap of trying to conclude who is fastest without really knowing what the others are doing.
“It’s the same story as every year. We really don’t care, we really don’t understand how people keep doing this but it’s how it is and now we focus on ourselves.”
